About Lee Whalen
Over the past two decades, Lee Whalen has distinguished himself not only as a versatile performer and recording artist across NW Montana and its environs but also as a dedicated educator. With roots in jazz, Lee’s musical journey has seen him navigate a plethora of genres, from playing in theater orchestras, rock, R&B, and blues groups to touring with country, Cajun/Zydeco, and even Klezmer and gypsy-jazz bands. His adaptability and proficiency across diverse musical styles make lessons with Lee a great opportunity for students to broaden their own musical horizons.
Lee brings to his teaching the same enthusiasm and commitment that he applies to his performances and studio sessions, ensuring that his students not only learn but excel. His approach is grounded in the belief that music education is about elevating others, helping them to shine in any musical setting, whether on stage or in the studio. Students benefit from his extensive experience and a holistic understanding of music, gaining insights not just into technique and theory, but into the very essence of music that cuts across genre limitations and speaks to the human element in all of us.
Apart from his teaching endeavors, Lee maintains an active performing scheule — whether leading his cover band The Acoustic Mayhem, laying down grooves with the fantastically-funky Soulphonic, or exploring the avant-garde with The Bleeding Romeos. As a multi-instrumentalist performing on guitar, 5-string electric bass, and upright bass, Lee embodies the versatility and depth that he aims to instill in his students, making lessons with him an invaluable investment for any aspiring musician looking to expand their skill set and musical understanding.
